The work

About our ceiling fan installation

A ceiling fan installation usually starts with a homeowner who is tired of a stuffy room or a light fixture that does nothing for air movement. You might be adding a fan to a bedroom, living room, or covered porch, or swapping out an old fan that wobbles or hums. The job involves more than hanging the fan: the ceiling box must support the weight, the wiring must be connected safely, and the fan must be balanced so it runs quietly. We handle the whole process, from the first look at the existing setup to the final test of every speed and light.

We begin by turning off the power at the breaker and confirming it is off with a voltage tester. If the existing ceiling box is not rated for a fan's weight and motion, we replace it with a fan-rated brace box that spreads the load across the ceiling joists. We then run the wiring, usually a 14/2 or 12/2 cable with a ground, to the new box, making sure all connections are secure with wire nuts and wrapped in electrical tape. Next, we assemble the fan, mount the mounting bracket, and hang the motor housing. We attach the blades, connect the pull chain or remote receiver, and finally restore power to test each speed and the light.

No two fan installations are identical. The biggest factor is whether the ceiling already has a box that can support a fan, or whether we need to cut into the drywall to install a brace. High ceilings or vaulted ceilings may require an extension downrod, which adds time and cost. The weight and size of the fan matter too: a large, heavy fan with a light kit takes longer to assemble and balance. Access is another factor, if the attic above is cramped or the wiring is old and brittle, the job takes longer. We assess all of this before giving you a firm estimate, so there are no surprises.

On the day of the install, we protect the floor with drop cloths and move furniture out of the way if needed. We work carefully to keep dust and debris contained, and we remove the old fixture and packaging when we are done. Before we leave, we turn the fan on at every speed and check for wobble, noise, or loose connections. You should clear the area around the ceiling box and make sure the power is off at the breaker before we arrive, we will verify it ourselves. After we finish, you can use the fan immediately, and we leave the space clean and ready.

If you are replacing an existing light, we remove the old fixture and check that the box can support the weight of a fan. If not, we install a new brace. We then assemble the fan, hang it, and balance the blades so there is no wobble at any speed.

The time and cost depend on whether new wiring is needed and the complexity of the fan itself. We give you a firm estimate before we begin, and we clean up all packaging and debris when we are done.

Fan-rated brace box

A standard ceiling box can sag or pull loose under a fan's weight. We install a fan-rated brace that anchors to the joists, so the fan stays secure for years.

Blade balancing kit

Even a slight blade warp causes wobble. We use a balancing kit with clips and weights to fine-tune each blade, ensuring smooth operation at every speed.

How the job runs

Our 4-step ceiling fan installation process

01

Power off and inspect

We turn off the circuit at the breaker and use a voltage tester to confirm it is dead. Then we inspect the existing box and wiring to see if they can support a fan.

02

Install brace and wire

If needed, we cut a hole and install a fan-rated brace box, then run the electrical cable to the box, making secure connections with wire nuts and a ground wire.

03

Mount and assemble

We attach the mounting bracket, hang the motor, and connect the wires. Then we install the blades and any light kit or remote receiver, following the manufacturer's instructions.

04

Test and balance

We restore power and test each speed and the light. If there is any wobble, we use a balancing kit to adjust the blades until the fan runs smoothly and quietly.

The difference

Why JM & Sons Electrical Services for ceiling fan installation

  • Secure mounting

A fan that is not anchored to a rated box can pull loose and fall, causing damage or injury. We always use a fan-rated brace and verify the mount is solid before hanging the fan.

  • Quiet operation

A wobbling fan is annoying and can loosen connections over time. We balance every blade and tighten all hardware so the fan runs silently at any speed, even on high.

  • Clean workspace

We lay down drop cloths, catch dust, and remove all old fixtures and packaging. You do not have to clean up after us, we leave the room as tidy as we found it.
